Body fat percentage measures how much of your total body weight is fat tissue. It is far more informative than BMI because it directly quantifies what matters: the ratio of fat to lean mass (muscle, bone, water, and organs).

How to Measure Body Fat at Home

You do not need expensive lab equipment. These three methods can be done at home with reasonable accuracy:

  1. U.S. Navy Method (tape measure only, accuracy within 3-4%): Measure your neck circumference and waist circumference (men) or neck, waist, and hip circumference (women). The formula uses these measurements along with height to estimate body fat. This is what our body fat calculator uses.
  2. Skinfold calipers ($10-$30, accuracy within 3-4%): Pinch skin at 3 to 7 specific body sites and measure the fold thickness. The Jackson-Pollock 3-site and 7-site formulas convert these measurements into a body fat estimate.
  3. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) scales ($30-$100, accuracy within 3-5%): Step on a scale that sends a low electrical current through your body. Lean tissue conducts electricity better than fat, allowing the device to estimate composition. Results vary with hydration level, so measure at the same time daily for consistency.

Ideal Weight Formulas

Several clinical formulas estimate ideal body weight based on height and gender. The most common are:

  • Devine (1974): Men: 50 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. Women: 45.5 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet.
  • Robinson (1983): Men: 52 + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet. Women: 49 + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet.
  • Miller (1983): Men: 56.2 + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet. Women: 53.1 + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet.
  • Hamwi (1964): Men: 48 + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet. Women: 45.5 + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 feet.

Which Metric Should You Track?

No single metric tells the whole story. Here is which to use based on your goals:

  • General health screening: BMI is a fast starting point. If your BMI is in the normal range and you are not very muscular, it is probably fine as a rough guide.
  • Fat loss or muscle gain: Track body fat percentage. Weight alone is misleading because you can gain muscle and lose fat simultaneously, with little change on the scale.
  • Athletic performance: Body fat percentage plus lean mass. Athletes need to balance being lean enough for performance without dropping below essential fat levels.
  • Long-term health monitoring: Use waist circumference alongside BMI. A waist over 40 inches (men) or 35 inches (women) indicates elevated health risk regardless of BMI.

The most important thing is to track consistently over time. A single measurement is a snapshot; the trend over weeks and months is what matters for assessing your progress.
