Moving Budget Calculator
Estimate your total moving cost including movers, truck rental, packing, storage, and hidden fees.
Last reviewed: June 2026What this Moving Budget Calculator estimates
This calculator builds a moving-cost estimate from move type, home size, distance, mover choice, packing service, and storage months. It separates professional movers, DIY truck rental, packing supplies, insurance or valuation, deposits and fees, and storage so you can see where the budget is coming from.
The rates are planning assumptions, not live quotes. A steep driveway, long carry, stairs, elevator reservation, shuttle truck, heavy items, high-season schedule, specialty packing, or last-minute booking can change the actual price. Use the result as a first-pass budget and then compare written quotes.
Cost model used
| Category | How the calculator estimates it | Default 2-bedroom local example |
|---|---|---|
| Professional movers | Home-size base cost multiplied by a distance factor | $3,500 |
| DIY truck rental | Home-size truck base plus mileage and estimated fuel | $191 for 30 miles |
| Packing | Home-size supplies, plus optional packing-service add-on | $450 supplies only |
| Insurance / valuation | Home-size base, increased for non-local moves | $120 |
| Deposits and fees | Home-size base, increased for non-local moves | $200 |
| Storage | Home-size monthly storage rate times months selected | $0 unless selected |
Default example
The default setup is a local 2-bedroom move of 30 miles with professional movers selected, no packing service, and no storage. The estimate is $3,500 for movers, $450 for packing supplies, $120 for insurance or valuation, and $200 for deposits and fees. That produces a total moving budget of $4,270.
The calculator also shows a DIY comparison. For the same default move, the DIY truck estimate is $191. The DIY total becomes $961 after adding packing, insurance, and deposits. The comparison line makes the tradeoff visible: lower cash cost for DIY, but more labor, coordination, and risk handled by you.
Long-distance example
For a 2-bedroom long-distance move of 300 miles with packing service and two months of storage, the professional-mover estimate is $6,300. Packing rises to $1,250 because the packing service is added to supplies. Insurance or valuation becomes $180, deposits and fees become $260, and storage adds $360. The professional total is $8,350; the DIY comparison is $2,560.
What to verify before booking
- Inventory: written quotes should match the rooms, boxes, furniture, and specialty items being moved.
- Access fees: stairs, elevators, long carries, parking limits, shuttle trucks, and appliance handling can add cost.
- Coverage: valuation and insurance choices affect what happens if goods are damaged or lost.
- Timing: end-of-month, weekend, summer, and short-notice moves can cost more.
- Storage: confirm monthly rate, access rules, minimum term, pickup fees, and delivery fees.
Moving resources
For interstate household-goods moves, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration maintains Protect Your Move resources and a moving checklist. Use those resources to verify mover registration, understand required documents, and compare written estimates before signing.
