How the Pet Age Calculator works

This calculator converts a dog or cat's calendar age into a rough human-equivalent age. It does not use the old "multiply by 7" rule. Instead, it treats early development as much faster than adult aging: the first year counts as about 15 human-equivalent years, the second year brings the total to about 24, and later years add a smaller amount.

For cats, the calculator adds about 4 human-equivalent years for each year after age two. For dogs, it adjusts the later-year rate by size: small dogs age more slowly after maturity, while large and giant dogs move through life stages faster. The result also shows a broad life-stage label and an expected lifespan range so the number has context.

Worked examples

A 5-year-old small dog is estimated as 15 + 9 + three later years at 4 years each, or about 36 human-equivalent years.
