How to Use This Time Calculator

  1. Choose a mode: "Add / Subtract Time" lets you add or subtract a duration from a starting time. "Time Difference" calculates the elapsed time between two clock times.
  2. Enter your times: Use the time picker to set hours, minutes, and optionally seconds. The format (AM/PM or 24-hour) depends on your browser locale.
  3. Read the results: The calculator shows the result time, total hours and minutes, decimal hours (for payroll), and whether midnight was crossed.

Adding and Subtracting Time

Time arithmetic is something most people encounter regularly but find surprisingly tricky to do in their heads. Adding 2 hours and 45 minutes to 10:30 AM requires carrying over from minutes to hours: 30 + 45 = 75 minutes = 1 hour 15 minutes, so the result is 1:15 PM. This calculator handles all the carry-over automatically, including crossing midnight.

Crossing Midnight

When you add enough time to cross midnight, the calculator shows "+1 day" to indicate the result is on the following day. For example, 11:00 PM + 4 hours = 3:00 AM (+1 day). When subtracting, crossing midnight backward shows "-1 day": 2:00 AM - 5 hours = 9:00 PM (-1 day). The "Days Crossed" result box makes this clear.

Time Difference Between Two Clock Times

The difference mode calculates the elapsed duration between a start and end time. If you enter 9:00 AM as the start and 5:30 PM as the end, the result is 8 hours 30 minutes. If the end time is earlier than the start time (for example, start at 10:00 PM and end at 6:00 AM), the calculator assumes the end time is on the following day and calculates accordingly: 8 hours.

Decimal Hours for Payroll

Many payroll systems and billing tools require time in decimal hours rather than hours and minutes. The conversion divides the minutes by 60: 7 hours 45 minutes = 7 + (45/60) = 7.75 decimal hours. This calculator shows the decimal hours automatically, making it easy to transfer time values to timesheets, invoicing software, or accounting tools.

Common Time Calculations

Typical uses include: calculating when to leave if you need to arrive by a certain time, finding out how long a meeting lasted, adding up work hours for a timesheet, planning cooking times with multiple dishes, figuring out flight arrival times across time zones, or scheduling breaks during study sessions. The calculator handles all of these with instant, accurate results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter the starting time, select "Add", then enter the hours, minutes, and seconds to add. The calculator handles carry-over and midnight crossing automatically.
Switch to "Time Difference" mode, enter both times, and the calculator shows the elapsed duration in hours, minutes, seconds, and decimal hours.
The calculator handles midnight crossing in both directions. Adding time past midnight shows "+1 day", and subtracting time before midnight shows "-1 day" in the Days Crossed result.
Decimal hours convert minutes into fractions of an hour. 30 minutes = 0.5 hours, 15 minutes = 0.25 hours, 45 minutes = 0.75 hours. This format is commonly used for payroll and billing.
Yes. Use "Time Difference" mode to find hours worked between clock-in and clock-out times. The decimal hours output is ready for payroll entry.
