What this Tip Calculator does
This calculator turns a bill amount, tip percentage, optional fixed tip amount, and number of people into a tip amount, total bill, per-person total, tip per person, and bill portion per person. It also builds a comparison table for 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, and 25% so you can compare common percentages quickly.
Use the percentage field when you want the tip to scale with the bill. Use the Tip Amount field when you already know the exact dollar amount you want to leave. When a fixed tip is entered, the calculator uses that dollar amount and updates the percentage field to the nearest whole-percent display.
Tip math used
With a percentage tip, the formula is tip = bill x tip percent / 100. The total is bill + tip. If the bill is split, the per-person total is total / number of people. The split detail also shows tip / number of people and bill / number of people.
Default example
The default bill is $85 with an 18% tip. The tip is $85 x 18% = $15.30. The total is $100.30. If four people split that total evenly, each person pays $25.08, with $3.83 of that amount coming from the tip and $21.25 from the bill before tip.
Using the comparison table
The comparison table is useful when the exact percentage is not yet decided. For an $85 bill, 15% is $12.75, 18% is $15.30, and 20% is $17.00. The highlighted row follows the percentage field, and the Export CSV button saves the comparison table if you want to keep the numbers.
Common mistakes
- Splitting only the bill: if everyone is sharing the total, split the bill plus tip, not just the pre-tip amount.
- Entering both a fixed tip and a percentage: the calculator uses the fixed amount when that field is the latest tip source.
- Forgetting service charges: some receipts include a service charge, auto-gratuity, delivery fee, or credit-card surcharge. Decide whether the tip should be calculated before or after those line items.
- Rounding without checking the total: rounding the tip or the per-person total changes the final amount paid.
- Using one rule for every situation: local norms, service model, included gratuity, and personal preference can all change the amount you choose.
